Necker Nymph FAQ
What can she do?
Guests who hire Necker Nymph can expect a ride that is similar to flying underwater. Once launched the sub dives down so you can explore the deep without having to get around by fin power. Uncover ancient shipwrecks, fly side-by-side with dolphins, or spyhop with whales - the options are endless. With the flexibility to glide peacefully over glorious reefs or banks adventurously, the sub is hydrobatic.
Where is she based?
Necker Nymph is based in the Caribbean and is available when staying on Necker Island. She is normally berthed on Necker Island's nearest neighbour Moskito Island.
Can I pilot her?
All Necker Nymph dives must be piloted by our certified Dive Pilot and guests will follow standard scuba procedures. Unfortunately guests will not be able to pilot the sub themselves.
How deep can she go?
Advanced divers who have previous experience of dives to a depth of 40 metres (130ft) can explore the deep without having to get around by fin power. Generally, most people hold an "open water dive" certificate and can dive to a maximum of 18m (60ft), with advanced divers to a maximum of 30m (100ft).
How long is a dive?
Dives last as long as your air lasts - divers breathe differently and use up air at different rates. The average dive length is 40 minutes.
Safety features onboard?
The craft has been tested to the highest possible safety standard, has generous back-up supplies of compressed air and is positively buoyant so it naturally stays afloat. She also carries flares and a radio. Safety criteria are designed to comply with international scuba standards.
Do I need to be scuba certified?
Training is a requirement for anyone going underwater on the sub, but this training can be done on Necker Island. For those of you with no diving experience, you have the option of an introductory diving course which takes half a day.
The training involves an hour completing a theory session, where you will be taught the basics of scuba diving safety practices through a video lecture and presentation given by the scuba diving instructor. Then you will be fitted with your scuba equipment and be able to practice and demonstrate basic skills you have learnt during the theory session.
Once you've completed this stage, under close supervision and guidance of the instructor, make an open water dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres (40ft).
Divers will need to be a minimum age of 10 years, have basic swimming skills and be in good general health.
If you wish to go to deeper depths, you will also be able to participate in their PADI Open Water Diving course which will be done over a period of 2-4 days.
Environmentally-friendly?
Importantly, like all DeepFlight subs, Necker Nymph has near-zero environmental impact. Its positive buoyancy prevents the sub from landing on a reef, and its low light and noise emissions ensure the fragile ocean ecosystems remain undisturbed.
