Normally Necker Island is hired privately, but during Celebration Weeks you have the opportunity to make it your personal retreat. On selected weeks throughout the year individual rooms can be booked to experience this private paradise 'house party' style. We're pleased to say that despite the fire on 22nd August, Necker Island is already back in business while the Great House is being rebuilt.
The island will be able to cater for slightly smaller groups staying in the six newly-refurbished Bali Houses, as well as Sir Richard Branson's private home Temple House and his 105ft luxury catamaran Necker Belle, both of which will substitute for the bedrooms lost in the Great House.
As for the Great House itself, many of the beautiful features of the original design will be incorporated into the new version to ensure it retains its authentic Balinese style, but it will also include a couple of new and innovative twists! In February and March 2012 Necker Belle will be spending six weeks in the Silver Bank, an area of the Caribbean about 100km north of the Dominican Republic which the whales - up to 7,000 of them - visit in order to mate and enjoy the warmer waters during the cold north Atlantic winters.
It's incredible to think that as recently as the 1960s the continued existence of the humpback whale in our oceans was in serious doubt, and it wasn't until a commercial whaling ban came into force in 1966 that the mass hunting of these creatures came to an end. Since then the population has recovered to approximately 80,000 worldwide and there are now opportunities to see humpback whales in their natural habitat.
These magnificent mammals are up to 16 metres long and weigh an astonishing 36,000kg, but in the water they're a lot more graceful than the average human. Virgin Limited Edition has partnered with a local expert who will be taking guests out into the water to get close to the whales which are often curious and display behaviour that means you can identify individuals.
